Default Check gauges / oil pressure sender.

2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2x2 with about 105K miles.

I searched about on this forum and google'd around as well. Today I noticed that the check gauges light was on as I pulled into the garage. I noticed that the oil gauge registered 0. I let the car cool down and checked the oil level - it was fine. While the car was cool I started the engine and the oil gauge was working fine. I have this feeling of deja vu as I think I replaced the oil pressure sender about 3-4 years ago.

I'm about 30 minutes from the nearest parts store. Am I in any way taking a chance in driving the Jeep in its current condition to the parts store ?

Totally different question - if you want to get as much oil out of the crank case during oil change, would you be better off having the Jeep totally level, with the front end raised or the rear raised ?

Thanks.

It would be taking a chance. Hear any internal engine noises?

I'm gussing it's a 4.0? Level is fine. These engine are raised in the front anyway. I do like to change oil while the engine is hot.

No there are no noises - and the Jeep is a pampered baby.

I may just have to keep my eyes on the gauges/lights and stop along the way (and wait) if needed. The alternative is to take a taxi to the store (and back).

I guess you cleaned and put dielectric grease on the connector?

Ok - just did - it is nice how they made that so easy. The connector was filthy but looked like it was on there pretty good. When I pinched the plastic 'holders??' the connector kind of shot off (not hard or anything just kind of like poof) and I had some oil on my hand. It reattached it just fine. The connector looked dry but dirty (not oily).

Well I guess I'll need to pick up some dielectric grease when I go to buy a new sender tomorrow. Any instructions on what to do with the grease ?

Thanks

Another thing you can try is to remove the sending unit and clean the hole out in it. Could be something clogging it. Also before you reinstall it have someone start the engine and run it just enough to blow any sludge out of the adapter hole.

I read somewhere today that someone replaced the oil filter with a Napa Gold oil filter after replacing the sending unit and oil pump failed and it worked. I gave it a try and it worked for me too! The oil pressure in my 2000 Cherokee XJ was almost nonexistent when warmed up and at stop lights. The check gauges light would come on. The Jeep has good miles on it tho. So give it a try. Cost is only $8. It's well worth it before replacing the sending unit and oil pump.

I'm going to head with this thread, it seems to most relevant to my issue.

2000 XJ, 145k km, Canadian Market.

Last week Oil pressure gauge went to 0. Finding all sorts written about duff senders, I replaced it. No change.

I found some diagnostic info online, and I've run the gauge diagnostic. Seems fine, gauges step up and move in 2 second intervals. Oil pressure included.

I've pulled connector, I have 5v reference voltage at pin 1 of the sender connector. On pin 3, I am supposed to have ground from what I've researched. Is this ground in reference to Jeep body or battery, or only sender ground? I get no measurable resistance on pin 3, which says sensor ground.

Is sensor ground just back to pin 4 on the PCM?

Thanks in advance!

Sending units don't create oil pressure. And Cherokees are notorious for having bad reading gauges.

^^^^^^ What he said. Oil filters play a big role in pressures on the 4.0 for some reason. Also the quality of oil. My rigs oil pressure can change greatly from fresh oil and filter and if I change from the RP filter that I use. Freaky....lol

Default oil

Hmmm. Last couple posts seem a bit confusing to me.

I did resurect an old thread.... Perhaps out of protocol.

Wondering if anyone could help me with pin 3 of a 2000 XJ oil switch/sender wiring?

Thanks....
