No. READ what's on the dipstick. The instructions for checking the level are almost always engraved on the dipstick.

Here's a scan of my '99 Owner's Manual that describes the AW4 trans fluid check procedures.
Note that is says to check it in PARK (4.0) and in NEUTRAL (2.5 only).
I think the procedure originally had you checking the AW4 in NEUTRAL but the Daimler Chrysler attorneys changed to PARK.
Note also that it calls for DEXRON II or MERCON fluid. Dexron II was superseded by Dexron III and blended with Mercon. Do not use Dexron II fluid.
Also, it says the fluid should be between the two holes - not on the '97-'01 dipstick. This may have been applicable to earlier dipsticks but not later versions. The fluid level should be between the hole in the OK range and the MAX line.
The 'dipsticks' that wrote the '99 Owner's Manual just carried over previous instructions.

The OP has a Grand Cherokee. It doesn't have an AW4. It's got a 42RE.
My '97 Grand 4.0 said to check it in neutral at hot idle. (Set parking brake!)
It also used ATF +4.
