Default Are Cherokee & Grand Cherokee Tanks Interchangeable?

So, I needed a fuel tank for my '97 Jeep Cherokee and went to ebay. Long story short it looks like I brain-farted and purchased a tank for a '97 GRAND Cherokee. I was looking at multiple listings and must not have read carefully.

So my question is, will this tank fit my 97 Cherokee? It looks slightly different, but very similar. Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks guys.

Did you pay for the part yet?
Somtimes if you contact the seller, and explain tht you dnt want or cant use it, they understand and cancel the order without problem or bad review.

Yes, paid and delivered. Shame it's the wrong part because it's been a very smooth transaction. At this point I don't know if an exchange is even a possibility. I'd have to talk to the seller. That's why I wanted to see if anyone knew if this part was usable in an xj.

Just drop the tank on your Cherokee and put the two next to each other and start comparing. That's my suggestion

I've looked at them side by side. They are very similar, but they are not identical. The tank from the Grand Cherokee appears to be slightly larger in some places. I did a dry fit and it does seem to fit the space. I was wondering if anyone had ever tried to use one before.

If it fits and everything hooks up where it should, use it and enjoy the extra 3 gallons it holds.

If it goes right in then I may look into doing this upgrade. It would be really nice to have a few extra gallons.

It looks like it may work, although I believe I'll have to swap the pumps because they look different. If the seller won't do an exchange I don't see the harm in seeing if I can make it work.

Success!

The tank does fit! I can now enjoy the extra three miles, I mean gallons, that the tank will offer!

I might try to put together a list of part numbers just in case anyone else is interested in doing this. At just under 20 highway miles to the gallon the extra three gallons should be worth approximately 60 extra miles.

Yes please fill us in on the parts you used. I'd love to do this to my jeep some time in the future

Good on you.

I was under my `97 recently working on the rear axle and I was struck by the substantial gas tank skid plate. Were you able to retain the skid plate with the new tank?

Good stuff. I wonder if this is an option for pre 97. Does anyone know the differences between the tanks? 97 is internal fuel pump and fuel filter vs pre 97 being external?

I think pre 97s are SOL, the tanks are completely different.

They have the same pump & filter set up. The difference is in the shape of the tank.
