My wife is so averse to driving all the way to the mountains to get me she's throwing parts at me left and right to get out of it. That's true love.

Red face cherokee rehab after river run

Check the vac line on the fuel pressure regulator to see if you have fuel getting in it, if it does the fuel regulator is bad and your fuel pressure will be lost. Also I saw a post awhile back that you can pinch off the fuel line going back to the fuel tank from the regulator to stop the fuel pressure regulator from passing fuel back to the tank to see if the pressure goes up, the regulator could be stuck open. How do your spark plugs look, wet or dry? That is the first place I look, spark plugs are cheap, if they are wet it will not start. Good luck

Okay i'm gonna do that now. I have a set of injectors coming in tomorrow so I'm going to take the rail off today and be ready to install them. I'll check the vac lines and stuff. Just changed the spark plugs. The old ones where really sooty. I'm gonna put a new o-ring on the regulator, too. I found my Haynes manual for this jeep that I had bought a while back before the flood. I thought it was lost in the flood, but i found it and have been pouring through it like a fiend. After the new injectors are in at least I can eliminate leaky injectors as suspects.

Update: I installed the new injectors and it seems to be holding MUCH more pressure than before. I haven't gotten a fuel pressure tester and my battery needs to be jumped before I can try to crank it. What seems weird is that when it turn the key the fuel pump doesn't seem to prime as long as it did. I put a new fuel filter on but it was before I decided to drop the tank, and I did turn it over a few times with the new filter on and the old crappy gas. Not sure if that little bit could have clogged the filter or not, but I'm gonna pick up another one just in case since they are so cheap. What I've done, ever how prudent or not, was to jump the fuel pressure relay and build up a good bit of pressure and I didn't smell any gas or hear the injectors leaking like I could before. Gonna run down the mountain for a little thanksgiving festivities, and when I get back hit the shrader valve and see how much pressure it has held for that amount of time and that will give me at least a ballpark idea of whether it held pressure while I was gone. Then I'm gonna jump the battery and cross my fingers. If it starts you'll hear me scream from sea to shiny sea. Happy Thanksgiving you guys and I am truly thankful for all the great advice I've received on this amazing forum. <crossing fingers>

Unfortunately, it's still doing the same thing. I believe it's narrowed down to a fuel delivery problem. Ordering a new regulator and a new filter. There isn't any leakage from the new injectors but it still smells like gas under the hood when I try to crank it. Maybe the charcoal cannister is clogged. Gonna look into replacing it, too, I guess.

Got mad fuel pressure now. I put a new filter in. It still won't start. It's squirting out like a fire hydrant from the shrader valve. This is a mystery worse than murder on the Orient Express.

Fuel pressure has been ruled out. Still won't start. Mary Poppins couldn't fly her umbrella through there without getting doused. What next?

Just to recap, you have good spark, and you have adequate fuel pressure. Just curious, did you drain and put fresh gas in the gas tank or are you using what was in there?

Have you check the auto shut down relay?

My apologies if I am repeating myself or if I missed it, I just like to double check.

I drained the tank and cleaned it according to multiple instructions I found on the web. Replaced the fuel filter again yesterday. Maybe have to step back a little. The jeep I got the PCM out of was said to be 'out of timing' and wouldn't run. I'm starting to think maybe that's been the problem the whole time. I know that sounds pretty obvious, but it makes sense now that I've thought about it. Is there any way to check the PCM with surety? My wishful thinking may have gotten the better of me. Thinking of getting another one and trying it and if that's not it just re-selling it or returning it. I have good mechanic friends and they are pretty much all stumped, too. Maybe I should try that first because it makes all kinds of sense that the PCM I replaced mine with could have been bad and that's why that jeep wouldn't start. My fuel delivery system appears to be tight now that the new injectors are in. No gas in the vac line to the regulator either. I'd be happy to feel stupid if this turns out to be the problem. Think I'll try that next. The PCM I found is the same number as the one that came out of it originally and they have a 30 day return policy.

One thing I would look at again is Cruiser's Mostly Renix Tips can be found at www.cruiser54.com. Also I have run into more lately is a new part was bad, so double check the new parts you put in so far. I do not want to give away my age but back in the day when a car would flood out (meaning too much fuel wetting the spark plugs) it will not start. Once the new spark plugs get wet it will not start, spark plugs are cheap. Pull the spark plugs, if they are wet replace them (some people get lucky by cleaning them) but they are cheap, buy a dozen. One last thing to check if you pull the spark plugs again do a compression test, this gives you a idea of the engines health. Just a few things to look at while you are waiting for parts.

Please do pardon my occasional ignorance / brain fart. I forgot the ASD was not on the earlier XJ's. It sounds like the PCM certainly could be an issue if the vehicle it was originally on was not functioning properly. I hope the new PCM will sort this out for you.
