So i have the 6cyl 3speed automatic Cherokee Sport, and when i turn the key the engine turns over for 3 - 4 seconds and then always starts. Anyone have any idea why it does not start right away? I'd appreciate any input.

My 98 Sport 4.0 does almost the same thing. I almost always have to turn the ignition 2x. The first one usually doesn't matter how long I do it for, it will not start. The second time it always starts up immediatly. It has never not started, but rarely starts on the first turn. I have no idea what it is about.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with the problem. About how long has this been going on for you?

the 4.0 is known to crank a few times befor starting. its normal.

Mine did that, then I cleaned the air filter (I have the K&N reusable one), and the problem went away.

it happens when its cold. your battery may be going bad, but for the most part, its just one of those jeep things. even with my optima red top when its really cold here it'll crank 2 or 3 times before it starts. if you want, turn the key all the way to just before you start it, it'll get the fuel pump to kick in.
