Default Cherokee vs. Grand Cherokee engine power

Hi all,

I was wonder if anyone knows whats the main difference in 4.0L engines Grand Cherokee vs, Cherokee.

I had Grand Cherokee some time ago and it was quick for such a big car, now I have 93 Cherokee and it is much slower but it has same engine? Am I wrong?

Thanks

Was the gearing in the Grand Cherokee the same as in your current Cherokee?

+1 on the gearing.

Also, your cherokee motor might be old and tired, how many miles on it?

Were talking about axle gear ratios dude, like 4.10:1, 4.55:1, 3.56:1....

Oh, I didn't know dude. I have no idea about gears. Not that Cherokee meant to be be quick, I was just wondering what is the difference.

Default tranny...

the two vehicles used different transmissions - that could explain the sluggishness in the xj as opposed to the grand. aw-4 was stock in the zj for one year only (1993), if i'm not mistaken.

Seems like it would be the other way around. Doesn't the Grand weigh about 600lbs more?

As someone who's owned both vehicles new the 4.0 Cherokee should run circles around the Grand. Also, our 4.0 equipped Grand wasn't nearly as comfortable pulling a boat as the XJ is. Sounds to me like there's something wrong with your Cherokee.

if your XJ is a 5spd, it came with 3.07 differential gears... this makes for a slug... put larger than stock tires on, and it only gets worse.

to help identify what is causing your concerns, we really need to know what motor, transmission and tire sizes each vehicle is/was equiped with.

Well, I just discovered that there is a hole in catalytic converter as big as it could be, looks like someone was checking whats inside It is hand made hole. It could be one of the reasons!?

I got my Jeep for free and didn't inspect it. Now I like it and will have to deal with it.

If the converter is clogged/restricted thats probably your power problem and why the previous owner tried putting a hole in it... Replace the converter and she'll probably spring to life.
