Cool i will check that out. I contacted the local transmission parts place. They want 119.00 for a converter and 295.00 for the front drum and assembly.

Do they have the parts or do they need to order them? My AAMCO place has no AW4 parts in stock b/c they have never had to rebuild one they say.

I checked the place that my local transmission shops buy there parts from. They gave me the direct number to them. And said i needed to pull the tranny and get the part numbers off converter or color code which ever it has. And get the part numbers of the front pump. To ensure the right parts. They also said they could have it same day.

Sounds like your supplier is on top of the parts scene. I live in a small town and everything has to be trucked here. We are the end of the earth.

I'd like to hear more about the differences of AW4 trannys.

As far as I knew from 1988 through 2001, the only difference was the 21/23 spline.

Wondering if thats my problem with my tranny. I put a 1993 23 spline tranny in my 1990 XJ. Shifting problems like you wouldn't believe. 1st gear to 4th then lockup within 30mph. If you floor it, it jumps to 1st gear at 45-50mph and starts jumping like crazy..then goes back to 4th gear.

I KNOW the tranny was good before I put it in. As I saw the jeep drive before it was parted out. So I know it was good..and when I changed the fluid it was nice and red...not burnt.

AW4 - 4 speed automatic, electronically controlled - manufactured by Aisin - used from 87-01 (87-91 models include a Power/Comfort button that adjusts the shift points)

Referring back to my initial post. and gathering info from others. It seems like the electronics need to go with the transmission also. You have a power/comfort switch correct?

Yes I have the switch in my 90XJ. I am also using the TCU from my 90XJ. The 1993 tranny was 23 spline. Thus the TCU was built IN to the ECU instead of being separate like it was in 1990.

My understanding was the solenoids were the same no matter what in the tranny...it was just controlled by a different system per year. Thus the tranny would accept the same signals no matter which system it was from. I thought it was exactly the same tranny except for the 21/23 spline break in 1991.

Bouncy, have you looked to see if the speed sensor inside the tailshaft housing is the same style as the old tranny? I don't know exactly when they changed the style, but somewhere along the line they changed from a 2 magnet sensor to 4 magnet. That could be your whole problem, as the computer is getting "double" signal input.
