I have pulled a 16' trailer with cars on them more than once. Even with the stock gears and 33's, it seems to pull fine. Stopping on the other hand is a bit sketchy sometimes

v8 ZJs are rated to tow 6500. i pulled a 3800lb car on a uhaul car trailer (according to their website the trailer is 2200 dry) so 6000 total with my 95 ZJ v8. wasnt bad at all. just have to know how to drive with that load back there.

I have flat towed 2 vehicles with it also. Towed a 93 escort to the scrap yard with a towbar, weighed right around 3000 pounds. Also towed my buddies 99 4x4 Yukon that has nearly every option. It weighs close to 5500 pounds. The towbar nearly killed us, even with him steering and braking the Yukon. So we pulled over and I pulled him with a chain. pulled him 10 miles and could barely tell he was back there, even up hills. I don't use overdrive when towing and I keep the Comfort/Power switch on high at all times, even when not towing.

I did a little more research and it looks like 5.2L ZJs are rated to tow 6,500 lbs. but 5.9L ZJs are still only rated to tow 5,000 lbs.
I never originally bothered to look up the 5.2L towing capacity, I assumed that since the 5.9L was the largest engine it would have the highest towing capacity, however it was apparently capped at 5,000 lbs due to overheating issues leaving the 5.2L with the highest towing capacity.

5.9 had a lower towing capacity because of the electric cooling fan. it doesnt have as much cooling capacity as the clutch fan found on 5.2s. also, 1998 ZJs did not have a transmission cooler, because chrysler decided it was unnecessary.

I do not have an owner's manual for my 2000 Cherokee Sport (with an auto tranny and the 4.0l I6) but I've read the max weight I can tow is 2,000lbs. GVWR. Is that accurate?
I ask because the previous owner has installed a tow hitch on the back. Pic is below.
It's bolted up pretty robustly to the frame. The wiring harness oddly is sticking out where the spare tire mounts.
Now, I've read that factory installed towing packages typically have a beefier alternator and transmission? I'm guessing my Jeep doesn't have that. So how much could I tow with this? And how would I go about moving that wiring harness down to around the hitch, where it belongs?
I'm wanting to get a small pop-up tent or camper trailer. If anyone has done this or is currently doing this, I'd love to hear about the pros and cons!

This one had the Chrysler 8.25. Probably a little heavy for it but she managed it for the 20 minute drive. Load and trailer together was close to 8 thousand pounds. Id imagine it can handle 5 easily with proper gearing.
