I've been getting clunking from the rear during acceleration and deceleration and decided to take a look at the slip yoke and the rear u-joints. I pulled the driveshaft out and found that the rearmost u-joint was significantly bound up. I then used the hammer-and-socket method to remove the u-joint from the yoke. Good news is that I found wear on two of the trunnions and that was good enough evidence to prove that this was my problem (or at least A problem). Bad news is that I see chips on the inside of the yoke itself. I'm not sure if it was my brutish removal method or if it was already chipped (it was probably me), but the question now is: do I need to replace the whole driveshaft now or is this repairable? I'm thinking I'll take it to a transmission repair shop (or something) nearby, but if anyone on the forum can outright tell me that it's toast, that would save me some time. Thanks
clean up the high spots, the burrs with a file and enjoy reusing them! Id reuse them if I was me putting them on my jeep, and I am me, and it will be my jeep in that case.
