Default Chopping the top..

Ok, I was inspired by juicyjuiced4x4s jeep build, and I'm gonna be chopping my top off. I am planning to wait until spring to do it, but I'm not sure if I have the patience. I live in sunny oregon, and I'm planning to keep using the jeep as a DD to and from work at least (1 mile). I was planning on rigging a canvas cover to keep the wind and wet from invading the cab too much, but I was wondering legal-wise if I need to put a window in.. I've been googling it but I can't really find anything that makes it clear.
The carpet is already history, and I have water leaking in from somewhere already, so I'm not too worried about getting wet. My cover will most likely be just strapped at each corner or maybe snaps, but I'm not worried about weathertight...
Any ideas? Anyone familiar with the law as far as rear windows go?

I'm no expert, but since the xj is of unibody construction, i.e., no frame-the vehicle depends on the entire body for stiffness. I have doubts whether this is a good idea (no offense). It seems to me that if you remove all or most of the roof, you'll lose a lot of strength. One fine day you may find that your doors won't open due to the body being tweaked. Just MHO.

you wanna do an exact chop like his. you will be fine as a dd but you might want to but a hoop roll bar in at the point of the chop for a little stubility. yea xj's are unibody and mine isnt choped and its got a very minimum treek to if some of my doors dont line up completely

Yep, I know this isn't a good idea... But I want to do it anyway. I was planning on adding frame stiffeners and a cage. Even then, I wouldn't be too surprised if it flexes, I just don't care all that much
