seafoam does clean well and cut crud. It can be seen first hand when soaking parts in it. I started using e85 instead and i think it works as well or better.
The water trick is old school. I changed my plugs, oil, and o2 sensor after drowning the jeep. To be fair, i was very hard on it. Sustained 4500 rpm then sprayed the garden hose until the engine bogged down to 2500-3000 rpm. I'd guess i did that for 30 seconds at a time for close to 5 minutes. I did this 70k miles ago (203k on it now) and i wouldn't be afraid to do it again. Every used car i buy gets that treatment. It works well. Nothing works better short of nitrous oxide.
Disclaimer: I've literally been dealing with engines since i could walk. Torturing, repairing, breaking, building, rebuilding etc. Suffice to say i have a fair idea of how they work and what can and can't be done.

this. citing sources who test and mix their own e85 from pumps, I will say that meijers e85 is as close to accurate as you can get. e85 is a phenomenal cleaner. it makes the insides of engines literally look brand new and will remove most anything off parts when soaked overnight.

E85 will also corrode fuel system components, like the fuel pump and fuel injectors.
Chrysler went to special injectors for their vehicles that are e85 compatible to address corrosion issues.
I suggest it not be used in our XJ's.

I know for 100% fact it will not corrode the stock injectors on a 97 xj. I soaked mine in it for 2 days and used them another 25k miles. they're currently in service on another jeep going on 3 years.
anyone wanting to do any of what I mentioned - do so at your own risk. I've seen it make mush out of fuel socks and early 90s low pressure fuel system hoses.
leaving the political bs out - it is an amazing fuel. however it basically must be treated like alcohol.

ive ran approximately 1000 gallons of e85 through my jeep over the past 4 years. using a 50/50 mix - 93 gas/e85. most any factory fuel injected system has no problem handling a mix. I am unsure of straight e85, but I do know the late 90s gm products can handle 100% e85 no problem in factory stock form. the only thing you really need to do is keep an eye on the fuel filter if it is downstream because the ethanol will remove any and all junk from the fuel system and the filter will catch it.

Hi everyone, OK did the water thing and I got four codes that will not turn off with my scanner. 1997 xj 4.0 w/auto trans. Codes 300,301,304,306 as far as I know these are misfire codes and I can't clear them with my scanner. Do I have to drive it for awhile before CEL goes off? I have driven it about ten miles and the light is still on. Thanks, Dan
