clunking noise
Hi I'm new to cherokee's. There is a loud clunking noise coming from under my jeep when i let off the gas. I'm pretty sure its the diff but I'm not sure. it also has a vibration when i go 45 and a knocking noise.

Sounds more like you have a bad Univeral joint somewhere to me. Get under your Jeep and give both of your driveshafts a good strong wiggle side to side at both ends. If there is any movement then, the U-joint you are near is bad.

This still could be a diff issue but, start with the u-joint test. they wear out quicker than a diff but they are much cheaper and easier to replace.

1st remove the front ds because that will help you locate where the problem is. Ive had a front ds go bad and it made all kinds of noise and cause vibes, not saying thats your problem but an easy thing to eliminate.

lots of play in the driveshaft is indicative of worn u-joints, may also be a worn out tranny mount, which can in turn put added stress on the u-joints and wear them quicker

Just remember though, if you just turn your drive shafts you will have some play because of the space between the gears...I thought I had a u-joint problem too, turned out to be my brakes...when my cousin's did the brakes on it before I bought it, they didn't buy the antirattle clips, or the slider clips and reinstall them...your brakes will beat the crap out of themselves and your caliper..
