Cluster 4wd light

Cluster 4wd light
I finally bought a jeep Cherokee a 2000 sport (check it out in introduction!) I test drove 8 or 9 Cherokees before buying this one and one I thing I noticed in the majority of them is that the 4wd functions perfectly, but the lights on the dash for full and part time do not light up. Including the jeep that i bought. Am I looking at a fuse or a bulb or something else perhaps?
I'm sure there is a write up on this somewhere or already posted but not quite the best searcher yet.
Any help would be appreciated

There are ways to debug this. Look into replacing the 4WD indicator switch. There are threads on this site that detail figuring out if it is the bulb or the switch. The switch itself is pretty cheap (normally $10 at your local parts store.) The switch is located on your transfer case.

Now that I remember you could just unplug the switch on the tc and blow it out or clean it to see if that works. It's a long shot but you never know, it could just be gunked up. (I tried this but to no avail. It has worked for some.)

now your TC is shifted from the handle in the cab and not electronically from there correct? so technically it doesnt matter if the light works or not, it still goes into 4wd

If you want to test the bulb you can unplug it from the transfer case and stick a paperclip in both slots of the connector as jumper. With the paper clip in the light should come on as soon as you turn the key forward to accessory. The 4wd switch is located on the driver side of the T-case on the top
