Default coil pack swap

This may have been gone into but im having trouble finding what i need. 97 xj with distributor. The bottom end has gone to the great beyond. I have found a wrecked 2001 grand cherokee with a 4.0 coil pack motor. what all would i need to steel from that truck and how big of a pain to change them out?

It would be easiest to swap your head and up onto the grands block. Then it should all just bolt it.

Your computer can't run coil packs. You can swap the camshaft position sensor for a distributor and then everything else should bolt in.

So you are saying if i pull the censer and the coil pack off, then put my distributor in its place then just run plug wire and cap and roder everything else should be plug and play?

Yes. Your 97 ECU won't know the coil packs are there, it's looking for a distributor. Might have to play with the timing a little because the position of the distributor will probably change when you swap it, but shouldn't be terribly off.

How many miles are on the newer engine? The 2000-02 4.0's are prone to cracking heads with the 0331 casting. Problem was correct after Nov 2002 I believe.

I dont know the exact millage but in April 2014 when inspected it had 86,000 and was rolled over in the summer time that year. It has been sitting since oil is old but no water. Im getting it for 200 so if it last a year and gives me the time to rebuild my current motor im good with that.

Oh that should be fine, most cracked heads seem to happen around 120k+ so I wouldn't worry about it especially for that price.

WJ (1999-2004) grand Cherokee blocks won't be able to swap into XJ. Engine/accessory bolt holes may not be there or even cast into the block. So u wouldn't be able to mount it into the XJ engine compartment.

that's right. It wouldn't be an easy bolt-in affair. It still can be done with extensive fabrication
