Dont do it!

my friend put one on his girls Jeep, she thought she was all hot **** and headed for the first water hole with speed. flooded out her Jeep and hydro locked the motor. 40 bucks now we got a sitting Jeep that needs a motor.

Just slap a KN filter in your stock box and open your exhaust.
You'll be much happier

Personally i have cleaned my KN intake three times. I have a lot of bugs and the air gets dusty here. If you build a heat shield then you will have a difference, but with out it your just pulling hot air. The CFM is higher on a KN cone intake, but that doesn't matter if the air has half the o2 because its hot. The goal is to draw cold(external temp) at a higher rate. Without both theres no point. Without a heat shield and a KN 6"/9",my XJ only got a boost of 2HP and +.5 MPG. I haven't tested it after the heat shield, But i'll let you know.

I sat mine atop the stock box to get it as high as posiable. I not too concerned with hot air . I'm more so with water. I had a drop in K&N (stock replacement) and hydroed the engine. The cone style filter allows air to enter from all sides. If water dose get that high, I'm most likely floating anyhow. It was effective and much cheaper than a snorkle. Parts were as follows. Filter from autozone, 3" exhaust coupling, brass pipe threaded fitting, factory lower box. Also have an outerwares pre-filter cover from my old quad I use when on the trails.

like the others said, a cai does not really do anything for you unless it is really colder air being drawn in. normally I would just relocate it under a fender and seal it and call it a day, but your jeep may see some off roading and that would cause a problem. A sealed system upwards (like a snorkle) would be your best bet in improving mpg and still have the ability to hit a bit of water.

LongIslandxj with the stock box you can stii easily hydrolock the engine water will still flow in the box and up the tube.

i ran a set up like the rustys air tube and after driving for a while if you touched the filter it would be hot as hell. After the sheild was installed the filter is cool to the touch now also the filter stays alot cleaner the sheld as mud splatter on it that otherwise would be alover the filter

Very true but a lot less likely.

The Rustys intake is the one my friend used, I tried talking them into some sort of shield...but thats the way it goes sometime.

I personally just run a paper filter from NAPA. I change it out very often and always keep the previous filter in my Jeep in case.

I am in the sand a lot and feel that a dry paper filter is better for me.

My exhaust is wide open with a highflow cat and muffler. Good for me once again.

I just feel that these home-made-so-called "CAI" are a waste of time and just make your engine compartment look that of a rice burner. ZOOM ZOOM

There is a big differance in the way my Xj feels as far as pick up and throtle response I have switched between the stock box and the air tube set up acouple of times and can feel the change.

Did it make a difference, not really. I would say I gained better throttle response and improved highway mileage. The combination of the intake and dynomax muffler sound great, but that's about it. Sorry about the dirty engine bay, had a leaking valve cover.
