Default compatible rearends with 87 xj??

If I were to look for a dana 44 rear end off of a different vehicle that was the same width as what I have now on my cherokee what would I look for? I know that the scout rearends work (that is what I put on the YJ) is there anything else?? (ford... ect??) Thank you!!

i just got into jeeps so please dont mind if this sounds dumb, but what axle do we have stock for the rear? i want to order a lift kit but it says its for dana 35's only. This all came up when the family asked me what i would like for christmas and i found this lift kit from jc whitney http://www.jcwhitney.com/jcwhitney/p...0007&id=408824, the reviews on it are good but i just want to make sure it will fit before i order it. its an 87 jeep cherokee chief 4x4 5 speed

You'll have either a Dana 35 or a Dana44 in your rig.

The link you posted goes to hte JC Whitney home page.

dana 44s from an early bronco would be narrow enough.

but the problem with any d44, other than a stock xj one, will have a different bolt pattern than your front d30.

You can get an Isuzu d44. You just have to change the pinion flange to a yoke.

Good call! I forgot about that one.
One of the nice things about the Isuzu D44 is that it uses equal length shafts.
