Completed my 2wd to 4x4 swap and now the transmission will not shift out of 1st gear
I have a 1997 XJ with the 6cyl 2wd automatic. I swapped in a 1998 aw4 with a np242. There are a couple connectors that did not match up on the transmission. Can anyone tell me what this thing does. (picture below) It is a rubber blue thing that goes into a hole in the tail shaft of the 2wd trans but the 4x4 trans does not have a spot for it. The speedometer connector did not match up either. Are these two things preventing my transmission from shifting? It goes from park to neutral to drive fine but will not shift out of 1st. It worked fine before the swap. Thanks in advance.

yes, this will keep the trans from shifting. you should be able to extend your 2wd harness about 18" for the speed sensor. you need to unbolt the whole housing from the 2wd trans. unbolt the fork that holds the speedo housing with the drive gear. and bolt the housing into the t-case. then extend the harness and clip it into place.

ya, the green guy needs a connection too, this may be the trans speed sensor. different from the speedo sensor. I would take a look at the 2wd trans and see if it had a connection. this trans didnt come with a harness?

I bought the trans from ebay and it did not come with a harness. I'm thinking that the green thing needs to be swapped to two separate plugs that will fit into the two connectors shown in the last 2 pictures. What do you think?

that probe is your tranny's speed sensor. it measures how fast your tailshaft is spinning, and without that you will not shift out of gear, and if it does shift it will go right to overdrive because it does not know how fast the jeep is going
