Default Confused on 4x4

1992 keep Cherokee 4x4. 4x4 gear/transfer case has 2hi, 4wd part time, neutral, 4wd hi and the 4wd lo. Which to use when? A lot
of opinions I’m sure. Mostly use when snow etc. NO off road

You've got a NP242 transfer case. 4 hi part-time is your traditional locked transfer case and is only for slippery surfaces like snow/ice, mud, gravel, etc. Full-time 4WD uses a clutch in the transfer case and can be used any time, including on dry pavement.

never use regular 4x4 on non slippery cement or asphalt roads ( unless you only drive in a straight line, no turns). 4x4 requires the ability for wheel slip, so dirt roads, Ice, snow, off road are ok for 4x4 cause those surfaces allow wheel slip

Ignore this and you risk damage to drive train$$$$$$$

The glove box owners manual should have all this info in it, get a copy of that book, read it!

There is no clutch in the NP242 transfer case. 2wd sends power to the rear, 4x4 part time sends power to both axles and locks the driveshafts together so they spin at the same speed, 4x4 full time sends power to both axles through an open differential in the transfer case so you can use it on hard surfaces without binding, 4x4 low is the same as part time but with a 2.72 reduction gear.
