Default Coolant smell from exhaust!!

Hey all,
So the other day I threw a magnaflow muffler on my xj (Sounds great I might add). Last night I stepped out to see how it sounded at idle, when I noticed that my exhaust definitely smelled like antifreeze. It isn't making white smoke, but it smells.

I've been reading about the fault in the 0331 head in the 2000 Jeeps, so I'm worried now. My coolant has been brown for a LONG time no matter how often I flush it, and it seems to disappear gradually. I've added about 2.5 gallons over 2 months. My oil seems a bit watery, I can't quite tell though. I might send it out to be tested. About a year and a half ago I did overheat due to lack of coolant (mostly my fault).

Are these all signs and symptoms of a cracked head? Just got my lift and tires set up real nice too

OO XJ = 331 head which is prone to cracking, an Coolant smell in exhaust = head gasket or cracked head.

With your symptoms an the amount of coolant your blowing threw I am 100% positive that your cracked the head when you overheated it !

x2^ gotta say that if you overheated a 00-01 4.oL then more then likely you have cracked the head. Most shops have litmus ( i think that i spelled that right ) paper to allow them to test if you have coolant in the exhaust.

Great. I'm going to get some tests done to confirm. Sounds like a fun replacement! It seems like the hardest part is removing the intake manifold, which I've done before. Just so much time and $$$!!

Well, speaking from very fresh experience (tool my head off yesterday), you'll need to take the intake and exhaust manifolds off at the same time and taking the exhaust manifold off is much harder...I've been told putting them back on will be much harder and I have no reason to dispute that. I'll cross that bridge when I get my Clearwater head hopefully next week.

Well I replaced the gasket which means both manifolds came off
