Default Coolant smell.....at times

im still somewhat new to the cherokees. im curious as to if anyone has had the same issue. at times, when my jeep is running or i cut it off and its still warm and im outside the jeep by the front i can smell a slight coolant smell. My temp gauge always reads dead in the middle, i do not smell coolant on the inside EVER so i dont believe its a heater core. im guessing my only option would be smelling it through the overflow. Anyone have that issue? again, all my gauges read right, it doesnt burn any smoke and exhaust has no coolant smell or oil residue. My jeep does not leak at all. again, i think its overflow can, any other suggestions or experiences?

my old xj did that, it ran fine passed smog and ran perfect for 20k miles that i drove it, then it sat for a year then ran fine when i sold it so it might not be something that you have to worry about right now but im also curious to see what it could be

Mine did that too, and every once in a while I would have to top off the coolant. When I was changing my AC compressor I noticed a green stain on the block below the water pump. Changed it out and no problems or smell since. Was weeping from the weep hole on the water pump, but only once it was up to temp and under load, I believe.

could be nothin but i would recomend getting a coolant pressure tester and cheking the system if it bleeds down the pressure you have a leak and get it fixed if it doesnt nothin to worry about

Could be a weeping radiator tank seal, a freeze plug starting to seep, a loose hose clamp, the weep hole in the water pump, or any number of other things. It does not take much anti-freeze to cause a strong smell.
