The 2000 should only be located on the T-stat housing. The sensor that was located on the rear of the head of earlier models was eliminated.

My check engine light is on, and I managed to read code 22: Coolant temp sensor out of range. When I checked the resistance it's reading 8+ cold, 3.5 at about 150 deg, and 1.6 at 210 deg. From what I've seen (which isn't much; most is on the ZJ) these readings are way high.

Does anyone know what the range should be on my 92 with the 4.0?

Everybody with the fluctuating temp issue make sure to
1: check and clean the connection to the sender, and I mean with some fine sand paper or something not just unplug and plug it back in!
2: check and clean grounds

I had a vehicle a while ago ( not a jeep but still )that would peg out the temp gauge but sometimes fluctuate and after checking things out the plastic connector for the temp sender had degraded due to heat and of course being old and the connection was just dirty and corroded.

It's measured in ohms. Cold it should be 7000 or greater, hot it should be less than 1000

I know this is an old thread, but didn't want to start a new one. The connector for the temp sensor on the rear of my 4.0L is burned a bit. Could this cause my idiot temp light to flicker on and off while driving? I took my XJ for a drive up the street after we put it together with new head, gaskets, etc. and the whole time the idiot light was flickering on and off. There was no smoke or fluids I could see coming out of the engine. Also I don't think the electric fan was working. I sense an aftermarket gauge in my future.

I also have a 96. And the sensor located near the back of the block is the coolant temperature sending unit (the sensor that actually controls your gauge, or idiot light in your case). So yes, if the wiring is burned up around there, it could cause the idiot light to go nuts. It's really not a huge deal if coolant isn't actually overflowing. But I would want to fix that cause it'd annoy the crap outta me haha

I installed a new sender unit in the rear of the head as there wasn't anything there when I bought a new head. I'm just being very cautious that this engine isn't overheating again. When I bought the Jeep it had a cracked head from overheating. The wiring on that sending unit isn't burned so much as the plastic connector is charred.

I'm thinking of getting either an Ultragauge or ScanGauge II to monitor the coolant temp as well as the other stuff those can do.

My 1999 Cherokee 4.0 Sport bucks and almost stalls after a cold start. I give it gas and after a few miles it is fine?

Replaced Crank Cam Crankshaft Position Sensor, checked IAC and still bucks when first start for a few miles.

Could it be the coolant temp. sensor?/??

Hello fellow Jeep goers... So I recently picked up a 1996 Cherokee Country 4.0L I6. I have done quite a bit of work to it so far, but one thing that is frustrating me is this - the coolant temp gauge is inop and for the life of me I cannot figure it out.
Now here is what I have diagnosed so far...(probably missed something obvious)
- replaced thermostat housing sensor
- checked gauge wiring in the instrument cluster at temp gauge (i believe it was violet/yellow wire)
So I have done some reading on several forums.. yet this is my predicament - its a 96 cherokee with OBDII. I have read that usually 95 and earlier have the two sensors; one at the thermostat and one on the left rear side of the head/valve cover by the CYL 6 injector and 96 and later only have the one at the housing. However, I also read that some 96 have both.
I have the 1000 page service manual through Chrysler for the 96, 97, and 99 and it states that there is a sensor under the exhaust manifold to the left of the block drain plug. I have checked thoroughly and I cannot find this sensor in that location. I also do not have the sending unit on the left rear side of the head; only the one in the housing. I also looked on my 99 Cherokee and it only has the one on the housing as well.
I am stumped on to what to check/do next. I used my thermometer to check the temperature at different spots and it is not overheating; the highest it got was I think 210-215 at the housing.
Any further information or comments or ideas are greatly appreciated - I know I haven't been an active member in the forum community and know I am considered a newbie.. my sincerest apology

Did the gauge work? I would imagine it would just be pegged. But anyhow I just replaced my head on my 96 for a head with same cast number but no port for the gauge sender.i just dont wanna tap into my thermo housing
