Default cooling system nightmares.

So, hey everyone, i love this site. i steal ur ideas all the time. Ive got a 93 sport 216k still goin strong altho im startin to doubt it now. ive got a coolant leak. thought it was the lower rad. hose. still leakin, took it to a shop and the guy told me the water pumps on these are garbage? but ive never heard of it myself... anyways, along with that im getting only luke warm air from the heat? assuming the heater cores clogged... so my question is, how hard is it to replace a water pump? keep in mind im from michigan so its freakin' cold and im not extremely partial to laying on the ground with snow all around. any help would be fantastic, thanks alot guys

Changing a water pump in cold temperatures would be miserable. Its not that complicated its just very messy.

its most likely the weep hole in yur water pump then ...if thats the case its only a matter of time before it goes out....changing it out is pretty cheap and easy but in cold temps i would dread it.

Drain your coolant. Loosen the nuts holding the wheel or fan onto your water pump first, then loosen the belt tensioner on your power steering pump and remove the serpentine belt. Since you're going to be making a mess and you're in there anyway, undo the bolts that hold on your thermostat housing above the water pump and replace your thermostat. Remove the bolts holding your water pump in place (you'll need to remove the steering pump bracket to break the pump free from the block). Pop it off and get an SOS pad, latex gloves, and brake cleaner and clean everything off of the mating surfaces for the thermostat housing and water pump. Get yourself new gaskets, some "Right Stuff" RTV sealant, and put her all back together tightening the bolts to the correct torque specs (I think they're 21 foot pounts ).
