Default Cost for fluid changes

Local shops wants $366 to do the following

Oil Change
Brake fluid change
Power steering fluid change
Transfluid change
Transfer case change

DIFFs not included - but I think I can get them to throw it in.

Is that out of line?

They already zapped me $184 to do the rear o2 sensor

Dear god man! 184 to do a simple o2? Those are pretty easy to do. The part is like 55 bucks (well mine was) that means they charged you over 100 bucks to reach their hand up, unscrew the sensor, and screw a new on in. Litterally, 10 mins of work.

And, again, that fluid change cost!! Are you getting quotes from dealers or something? Please pick up a helms/chiltons and do those fluids yourself. Its so much cheaper and very easy to do. Unless of course money is no issue, and you dont want to do it, then nevermind.

It is not that I do not want to do it , but it 20 degrees here and icy.

I was going to do the sensor myself but it is original and 10 years and 160k of road salt and the whole exhaust is brittle with rust. I figured the threads would come out with the sensor, or I would be pushing my breaker bar with my foot and bend the whole exhaust pipe

I also need new tires and a paint job on the roof. This is a 3rd car for me so I do not want to spend a ton of money on it.

The mech at the shop said the fluids look original

WOW that's quite a bit of money. Here r some prices if you do it yourself...Tj

Oil Change=6 Quarts of good oil and filter from Auto-zone or advanced auto, $15-20
Brake fluid change= Why change the fluid unless there is water or condensation in there? anyway 1 litre of Brake fluid= $4.99-6.99
Power steering fluid change= again why change it?
Trans fluid change= about $50-60 if you change filter (always good to do)
Transfer case change= You just use Dextron 3-4 trans fluid about 2 quarts=$8-10

what kind of transmission do you have? Trekker's got it on the nose, unless you have a manual, in which case expect to pay maybe a little less.

Yea, thats understandable. No garage? I guess I keep forgetting how fortunate I am to be able to use the base auto hobby shop. They've got lifts and stuff which make things a breeze. However, if you do decide to do it, you'd be amazed at how easy they come out. The trick is, get the vehicle good and hot before you do it. Drive around for awhile, and then take it out. I just did mine this weekend, and although I cant be sure, it looked old as crap but came out without much force applied. Just made sure to drive around a bit before I did it.

Again, if you dont want to spend much money on it, save yourself some dough and do those fluids yourself.

AW4.

I used to do my own OCs but to save $10 over the shop doing it is not worth it to me. I have none changed any other type of fluid myself before but I guess I could.

I am pissed at myself about the o2 sensor already

well hey bro, now is a good time to learn! just lay down an old piece of rug or a piece of plywood out in your driveway and lye on that.

its very satisfying to know you spent ~100 dollars or so to change this stuff, when they'd charge you more than 3x that amount. pick yourself up a FSM if you dont have one, that'll help.

lets be realistic here guys,
he's asking about the cost to do it at a shop, not to do it himself. If its below freezing there none of us would want to be outside that long. shops prices are mainly based off of labor, not just parts. the price he has listed is actually VERY reasonable for what he wants done(if not on the cheap side). yeah it costs a whole lot less if you're just considering parts prices and doing it yourself, but not everyone can or wants to do it themselves. Dont get me wrong, im a big fan of learning to do things myself, its way cheaper and always useful to know, but some people dont have the time or right conditions (like 20 degree weather) to do it themselves.

As for the O2 sensor, they probably charged you for the time to put it in and the time to diagnose the problem, some places offer free computer scans but a lot of shops do not.

In regards to the orignal question, I'd say go for it, thats a lot cheaper than a dealer shop would charge you.

If I was closer I would change your fluids for a small fee. LOL, I always have a friend or family member that has a garage I can use. I would think that you know someone that has a garage you could use? Just saying it would be better than freezing!!

The o2 sensor may not have been a bad deal. If it was original and rusty then they most likely they had to put a torch to it to break it free. I've done probly 20 o2 sensors in my time and probly 15 were a PITA!

I decided to have them do just some of the work today.

$298 got me

2 new wipers
Oil Change
Transfer case fluid change
after cat 02 Sensor replaced

They want to do this at another time

$140 for a trans flush with their machine
$50 brake fluid
$50 PS fluid
$50 diff fluid change (not sure if that is one or both)

Maybe I will wait until it gets warm and do some of those myself, maybe I can find a local jeeper to help me out, anyone Mahwah NJ?
