speaking of fluids, i have heard a couple theories on fluids. well i mean for the tranny, one is not to do itat all, other is if its not red then change it and then to blend, some old some new and overtime gradually switch it over. i have a 89 4 door with the 4.o. wanted to know whats the best plan of attack

If you haven't done your brakes recently, I'd let the shop do the brake fluid change. At least if/when they snap the bleeder valve off, they'll be able to just re-thread and stick a new one in, where you'd be stuck changing out the cylinders.

I may just take you up on that for the trans, brakes, and PS fluid. I would just like to have some competant help the first time I do something like this.

In my past life I have done spring/struts, cold air intakes, FPR, and Boost gauge installs, but never messed with fluids much.

I mean its not like I'm a mechanic or anything, I'd just be willing to help you out. I've done the pan drop on auto transmissions before, but not as much experience with the PS or brake fluid, though that isnt very hard either. Are you wanting to do the T-case too?

And itd have to be outside at my place too haha, I dont have a garage to work in either. It isnt that cold yet though.

Hello all new to the site here. I have a question about changing the fluids. I just got a 98 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0 L Manual tranny with 133,000 miles on it. I just changed the oil , oil and air filter, distributor, distributor cap, plugs and wires. I want to do the coolant, transmission fluid and each transfer case fluid change. I know how to do the manual transmission fluid (the drain and the fill plug one on top of the other, 75w 90 i believe) but the transfer cases, and getting to the Manual transmission filter have me confused. I have a haynes Manual but it is not very detailed when it comes to this. I have read on here to use dextron III, or IV, for the cases, but I only see one fill plug on each case. Do I need a pressure/vaccum system to drain and fill the cases?? Additionally Do I have to drop the transmission to get to the transmission filter?? I think the transmission is an AX 15. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

Chumperdink I think your a bit confused. To me your confusing the front and rear diffs with the transfer case. Look directly under your car at your driver door the aluminum box there is the transfer case. Fluid change on that is simple as it has a drain plug and a fill plug. The diffs front and backhave only a fill plug so you must remove the cover to drain fluid. Not hard but more time consuming.

dude, just do it your self its not that hard you get to know your jeep a little better, and you feel like you accomplished something when you finish.

Default oh yeah I knew that....not!!

Xj thanks for the update this is my first 4 wheel drive vehicle so I want to learn all I can, your information is much appreciated. Just to clarify so I do not put the wrong fluids in the wrong places... The Manual transmission and the tranfer case use (according to manuals) 75w 90 oil, and the difs use possibly dextron three or four? Just want to do this right the first time. Thanks again XJ.

sounds about right just obey the manuel and advice from other jeepers and you will be fine. just make shur you use high quality fluids, and take your time on it and you wont mess it up. my uncle was changing his oil and forgot to put the plug back in a started driving away and burned up his motor, thats just proof that if you slow down and take your time you will be ok.

No, the diff's use gear oil. The transfer case uses ATF.
One more thing to note is some cherokees had a tracklock limited slip diff. If thats the case with yours you'll need an extra lubeto add to the diff. This only applies to the rear diff.

Id just like to know why it is it that everything thats got fluid in it or controlling is having to be changed?.. I can understand the motor, trans, transfer case, front and rear diffs but brake fluid and power steering!?.. What, has someone poured water in it? I mean yea when it comes to maintance on my vehicles im all over it but i have never flushed and put fresh brake fluid in none of the probably 25 vehicles ive owned in the past 10 years. I can understand power steering fluid if maybe the steering box is burnt up or was full of water and installed onto your jeep and someone poured fresh in the reservoir and it got mixed in together. Also those are some crazy prices, did they even give you a kiss afterwards?! I relize mechanic work isnt cheap now days but still, hell far! i guess situations like this make me glad i was raised by a father who has been a mechanic all his life and i picked up the majority of his knowledge. And im not bosting either, just saying.
