Couple of JY upgrade questions.
As soon as the warm weather comes I'm going to start to build my jeep some more. I'm starting with my steering. I'm going to do the v8 zj tie rod, drag link and the durango steering box. My question on this is, is the steering box a direct bolt on? And can I use my pitman arm or do I need the durango pitman arm? Then I am going to swap the 27 spline shafts in my 8.25 to the 29 spline. Question for this is did any 97 come with OEM LSD? If so does the tag on the diff cover say if it is a LSD? I figure I have to change the carrier for the swap so why not get one with a LSD instead of having an open diff.

My 97 police packaged XJ came with an LSD rear, no tag on the diff though. (that I can remember). It did however have a reflective sticker inside the glovebox that said something like "This vehicle is equipped with a Limited Slip" and a bunch of technical data.
Hope that helps.

find a 29 spline axle swap the whole thing over would be even easier. You could even get an Aussie locker that then get 29 Spline shafts that would give the same effect, a lot cheaper works better especially if you wheel it (even with LSD if one tire comes off the ground it will act like an open diff) and not have to re set the gears, unless you are going to re gear anyways.

I'm a bit ahead of you though, i already picked up my durango box and v8 ZJ tie rod from my local JY.
A note though - the ZJ drag link is EXACTLY the same as the XJ, so don't bother getting that (i know - i now have a useless zj drag link sitting in my shed).
Basically, you swap your XJ pitman arm over to the durango box (the durango arm is the wrong joint style), use a few washers to space it out from the frame more, and it bolts tight up.
I also purchased the C-ROK steering box inner brace at the same time to reinforce the frame rails. This thing is pure beef and replaces the crappy aluminum factory spacer that will likely fall apart when you try to remove it.

BUT, 27 and 29 spline axles DO use different carriers and spiders, so the point is kinda Moot.

Just the center pin if it's a c-clip axle! :0

Ok so here's the deal I have a Harry's U Pull It near me and the one near me is supposed to be the largest jy on the east coast. Every part under $100. I went through there price list and for a 5 lug rear end its only $50. And for the zj drag link. It really doesn't matter because my drag link is shot and needs to be replaced anyways. I'm just trying to decide if I want to pull the steering from a JY or if I want to buy it new. And I have the hi country offroad dring shackles on the front and there is a plate for mounting the one that adds a lot of strength to the steering box

fyi - the drag link is the same on the ZJ as the XJ. The TIE ROD (the rod that goes between the tires) is the upgrade from the v8 ZJ.
As far as pulling it from the JY, do it it's way cheaper. As long as the boots are semi intact over the joints, they will still be greased up well, and the joints should be fine. Just test each one by hand before walking out with it (should rotate but not move in-out or side-side). The boots can be bought separately and are really cheap.
I'm getting ready to do this along with the durango box on mine and it's def the way to go
