cracked t-case
ok so this morning going to meet 98plum crazy to sell him some skid plates my driveshaft flew off on the highway at 65mph and shattered into a million pieces so after i got home from meeting him i took a good look at it and noticed a 3 inch long crack in the transfer case. do i need to replace right away? im not planning of wheelin any time soon. also my u joint caps were melted to the rear differential. i was able to drive it home 15 miles with no issues.

you can switch to a 231 but I would get a new one right away, there are still moving parts in the tcase when you drive, those parts with out lubrication are going to heat up and melt or even worse. you need to get it fixed before you drive anywhere else

Mine did this same thing, and within a few minutes of highway driving, I felt the t-case chain slipping. When I got to the shop, and took it out, the case was almost in two.

ok so i went out and took a second look at the crack and noticed that the main part of the case isnt cracked but just the rear part that the cone connects to could i just replace that and be fine so i dont have to dump a large amount of money on a new t-case

Idk how they go for locally for you, but around here you could get a 231 for 100-200 used. 242's are pretty much the same price-wise but not as abundant. That might be the best option if you dont want to open it up, I know I wouldn't

See I like the 242 better so I don't have to keep switching back angle forth in the winter. And I don't know if I want to do a entire swap if I can just swap the rear housing case
