[QUOTE=92SmokyCherokee;3695448<snip>Do we have a camshaft position sensor in a ‘92? I just changed my distributor cap and plug wires.[/QUOTE]

Yes, it's in the distributor. You can see the wire harness coming out of it. It's under the plate where the rotor attaches, It's also called a sync sensor or distributor pickup. Jeep says it's the distributor stator.

Not sure about a '92 but I think you may have to disassemble the distributor (remove the shaft) to replace it. When I did my '88 I just got a complete distributor. Save the cap and rotor for your next tuneup.

Check the harness and connectors. Make sure it's clean, no frays or bare wire showing.

As far as replacing it, should I just replace the whole distributor or just the part linked above?

If the distributor shaft isn't wobbly or any other problem, you can replace the sensor (assuming it's actually bad and it's not a wiring issue).

I ended up replacing the whole distributor, including the camshaft position sensor which took care of my 54 code. However, despite that, the Jeep still won’t start. After installing the new distributor it came very close but never actually started. I’m now getting a spark as well. Could my aftermarket cps be bad? I’ve heard that only the moose ones are reliable but I’m not sure where to get them. I cleaned some of the grounds but I’m having a hard time accessing them. Any further suggestions? Where should I buy a mopar cps?

Is the distributor timed correctly and the wires in the right place. Some of the pictures out there show the wrong firing order.
See https://cruiser54.com/?p=68 for how to properly install and time the distributor.

Before I spend an arm and a leg, can someone confirm that this is the right part for my 1992 XJ 4.0L?

Also, I am getting a spark, does that mean that my cps is working?

The parts catalog shows a different part number between 1992 and 1993.

Looking at pictures, I think the 1991/1992 sensor is the same, but ha a round plug instead of the oval/rectangular one.
Not Mopar, but looks like this https://www.quadratec.com/products/55125_0007.htm

I looked up that part number and it's been discontinued.

That's what mine looks like. I assume that the '93 sensor wouldn't work due to the different plug.

I tried to time the distributor, hopefully it’s right now. Still getting the crank but won’t start issue. My next step is to eliminate the crankshaft position sensor. If I have a spark when I attempt to start, does that mean that the CPS is working? Also, I’m trying to find a CPS for my 92. Here’s what the plug looks like. Does anyone have a link to where I can buy it?

Also, I've heard some people say NA?PA CPS works. Is that a worthy substitute for the mopar cps?
