cranks but won't start
1st posted a month or so ago. Thought I'd go thru what it took for this 75 plus senior to get my 91 running.
I don't do heavy wrenching anymore but still do the basics.
1st thing I did was change out the plugs. Then new cap & rotor. Then ordered a new distributor. Still wouldn't start. Was told most likely the crankcase sensor, ordered one but in looking at the details of removing & installing on You Tube, I decided to pass.
I live 18 miles from town and 6 miles up a mountain dirt road. I finally posted a ISO (in search of) on a local facebook page for a mobile mechanic in my nearest town asking for someone to install the new distributor as I couldn't get the old one out. A young man messaged me back it was most likely ground or coil. I asked if he worked on jeeps. He & his family own 5, and has been working on them since he was a child. I ordered a coil and he came up the mountain.
He tried to remove the distributor but the bolt wouldn't budge. He thought it looked ok and installed the new coil (which had a crack in it) checked the ground and other electrical components. Still wouldn't start. He didn't have the correct open wrench for the distributor so we decided he would come back the next week.
Came back yesterday and still couldn't get the distributor bolt to budge. Someone really torqued it down tight. Then he installed the new sensor. Still wouldn't start but we now had a strong spark.
From day one, I thought it was the fuel pump and I had already had a new one in the box and waiting for when I needed it. He did some checking and sure enough no fuel to the injectors.
He then checked the pump and could hear the pump pushing gas back into the tank. He removed it and the short 4 inch hose was rotten, along with the other rubber components, the hose was blown off the pump. He installed the new pump and it started right off. Not idling smooth but he said the computer needs to catch up on all the changes?
I'll give it some test runs today to see if it smooths out. I know I could have saved on parts but they all needed changing anyway. All factory parts. The young man was very reasonable and asked far low what he should have. I gave him $100 the first time and $100 yesterday. Fuel pump alone would have cost me over two hundred at a shop. So for $200 labor and less then $200 in parts, I now have a running jeep with a new sensor, coil, spark plugs, cap & rotor & fuel pump. Not bad in my estimate and I only had to supervise. lol Don't get old folks, its hell.
