Bota,,,,,,so now you have new chain and gear in, how is the slop?
still there, right at or near TDC?
or did it tighten up a bit?
Curious in Kenosha.

Not sure about TDC tho, but i turn the crankshaft a couple of turn and the dots on both gear lined up fine.
Btw, my timing chain replacement might just be a complete waste of $$ as we are suspecting a very worn out motor (compression test results as above).
Gonna be doing another compression test as well as a leak down test.
Wish me luck .

Hmmmmm......
ring set, crank bearings, rod bearings, gasket kit, piston bore honer(for cordless drill), plastiguage, micrometer, block boil, torque wrench, new head bolts, head service......
seems a WHOLE lot cheaper to me, and satisfaction you did it your self (mostly)....
lot less than motor. unless you are looking at JY motor, then you could be looking at same problems sooner than later.
but just my opinion sir! I wish you well in your decision!

hoist (which you will use to change motor anyway and engine stand).
so if you are gonna have someone do it then i cant post anymore.

E92 here sir but i spent more time working and driving my pos jeep.
I'm in a dilemma because i intend to put some money building it and would like to know what are my options if the engine dies on me.
Btw, i have no intention of paying someone to work on the Jeep (is more like a little learning project for me) and i'm pretty certain i can do an engine swap based on what i read but rebuilding an engine is definitely way of of my league.
No idea what long or short block is but i'm guessing is with head or without. Napa's engine would be long block then.
Oh, thx for the link but i couldn't find any engine for my 99'.....maybe i should go for a stroker instead .
I better start a new thread huh?

my 525i is a babe/cruising/classic magnet I have ever owned!
anyway, Long bock is a remanufactured engine which has everything EXCEPT the intake manifold,exhaust manifold, A/C compressor, water pump, harmonic balancer, sensors, oil filter housing, distributor, etc etc . they MAY include the valve cover, not sure.

sir, rebuilding the 4.0 is not that difficult. I am serious.
I am a wrench by experience not by trade, but i can hold my own.
I rebuilt a Z-51 Corvette and my 525i based on the math of the manufacturers specs and everybody is happy!
its not that hard if you research the tasks and set a plan.
the only difference iss the time R & R ing the engine.
you are going to do it anyway...so why not take the step? its only math.
ok,, lotta grime too.

but serious, by replacing the rings, bearings yourself you will know your jeep like you would know your heart surgeon...

As long as you don't have the distributorless ignition system that block will work fine. Even if you do you can still make it work with some easy custom brackets.
With compression numbers that low I'm sure a rebuild will require more than honeing the cylinders out, it'll need bored. My machine shop cost were over $1000 to rebuild mine. Add in the cost of new parts and I was just under $2000 for a nearly stock rebuild motor. Oh, and I'm assembling it myself, it was going to cost another $400 if I had the shop assemble it.
Depending on how that core charge works out that link seems like a pretty good deal, especially with the warranty.

I'm still of the opinion that if the jeep was running well, not using oil, and had decent power, to ignore the compression readings and drive. Do all your other fixing up, and when the engine does decide to go, THEN rebuild or exchange. May be putting the cart before the horse. I heard nothing about the Quality of its running,, only the sloppy timing chain video, which was solved.
