Putting cruise control in my '99 sport and looking at the Crown Automotive clock spring.

Anyone have any experience with these? Are they reliable?

I am running one on my 99 XJ. Installed in September of 20 and still working!
I picked it up off of Amazon. Best price I could find then.

I installed the Crown Clock Spring in my ‘99 a few weeks ago.
Nice to have the horn and cruise back.
From what I could see, the red and white Mopar version was pretty scarce and pricey.
And prices ranged all over the place.
And I also wondered if some of these had been “ new” in the box for 15- 20 years now?

The Crown version feels a bit lighter, probably made of more plastic.
The little set tab, grenade pin you pull at the end is nice- to keep things lined up

Yeah, I bought a used one off Ebay and it doesn't work. It was about the same price as the Crown Auto version is new.

If you are just having trouble with the cruise, I would be looking at the vacuum lines. Known problem is that they break where they enter the firewall on the engine side. (right under/between the heater water lines). Or the reservoir behind the front right bumper is missing or cracked.
The problem areas with XJ cruise is the clock spring in which the horn stops, the vacuum or the switches. I had all 3 present in mine when I bought it, now they are all working! Replaced the reservoir, patched vacuum lines at firewall, replaced clock spring and replaced cruise switches.

Good to know. I'm fairly certain it's the clock sprint itself. Everything worked fine until I put the one with cruise in. Now the airbag light is on, the horn doesn't work and the cruise isn't working.

The reservoir behind the front right bumper - are you talking about the servo or is there supposed to be something at the end of the vacuum line beyond the servo?

I traced mine and there is currently just a screw at the end of that line ending about where the battery is.

There should be a "jug" behind the front right bumper. (Proper name is "vacuum reservoir") About the size of a small cabbage head and black plastic material. It is the end of the line past the servo.
Without it, you won't have enough vacuum for the vent selector, cruise and stuff that needs it. They are available at u pull it junk yards for cheap!

Mine was there but fractured, I used the aluminum tape used in duct work to seal it until I made a junk yard run

The old ones were shaped like a bread loaf and the newer ones are as described above. Maybe that will help you get the right one.

It could be the problem or part of the problem. I also had the line going through the firewall by the heater lines broken. It is common, so you may want to make sure yours is good.

As for as wrenching, I couldn't tell unless you told me! A XJ is a adventure, but if you like them they are addicting! My latest (99 Sport) is the 6th one I have owned. Started in 1984, guess I am hooked.

This is my second one. Had a 2001 a few years ago and reluctantly sold it.

I did some searching and couldn't find any canisters for anything after 1996...

I really don't think you will find NOS vacuum reservoirs. That is why I suggested you go to a u-pull-it yard. Our vehicles are getting old and recycling parts is about the only way we will be able to get a lot of them.
If you need it, I can post a pic of my old one (still has the tape on it) that I replaced. About all you will need is a 1/4 rachet and socket set to pull it. Let me know!

Unfortunately it's slim pickins on salvaged XJs around here, I'll have to dig deep. I searched Ebay and for new and didn't find anything.

The first 2 pics are of the reservoir I removed and the last pic is one of the reservoir currently installed. Not factory installed, as I don't have a factory front bumper.




There is a 98 XJ at my local U-pull yard. If you run out of options, I could run up there first of the week to check/liberate it.
Depending on where you are, shipping should not be a problem.
