Default Cruise Control Intermittent -> Non-functional

Every since I got this '97 XJ (i6, aw4) the cruise control has been finicky, you have to push on/off then set several times to get it to take.

Over the last 5 years, it slowly got worse. Had to push it more times.

Now it just doesn't work.

Sound like the clock spring to you guys?

Anyone have a good set of instructions for a '97 to REPAIR (not replace) it?

Does the cruise light go on even when it doesn't work?

Think I would start with checking the vacuum line from the ball behind the bumper back and see if anything jumps out at you.

OK, how hard is it to get at that ball? Do I remove the bumper? Never had my hands on the bugger b4.

Really can't remember.
All you want to do is make sure the vacuum line is hooked up to it and line it self looks solid.

OK, found it.

The vacuum reservoir and all vacuum hoses appear to be in good working order.

Didn't really think that would be the problem but figured easiest and least invasive thing to check first.
So I am wondering if there is a way to to check the switches. Probably should see if there is a way with a Google search.

Cool, thanks. They don't look to expensive. I don't think taking the wheel apart is too hard, provided I remember to disconnect the battery and not deploy the airbag in my face.

I had the same issue. It was my brake switch on the pedal kicking it out. Got a new one from Autozone and it works perfectly. Must have been worn.

Hey, can you elaborate on that? The brake pedal was kicking what out? The vac line?

Thanks!

Tapping the brake turns off cruise. If the brake pedal switch contacts that keep the cruise circuit armed wear out or become dirty (high resistance) the cruise control can kick off or not engage at all. The switch can be replaced. Just know that when you install it to not depress the actuator by hand. It self adjusts after it's installed by initial movement of the pedal. Once set it cannot be readjusted. The instructions received with the package should give a warning about it.
