Cruiser54 (or anybody) please help.
1989 Jeep XJ 4.0 Auto 4x4
I have an 89 jeep that i just got it is doing the exact same that my 94 does.
It jars/vibrates at around 45mph.
I know it is not tires or anything mechanical because when I unplug my TCU and shift manually it runs perfectly smooth. Plug it up; runs smooth until 45mph.
I read cruisers correct way to test TPS. It appears to have correct resistance. From probe B to negative battery post.
From probe A to D it has 4.6x and from B to D it has 3.8x which is 83%. When I have it robed at A and D and pull the throttle chord shouldn't it rise gradually from the 4.6x?
EDIT not sure if this matters (probably does haha) my speedometer barely wobbles until you guessed it 45mph then it stops. THe speedometer shakes whether TCU is plugged in or not but vibrating of jeep only occurs when TCU is in.
Please bare with me and help get this vibrating gone. My beat up 94 does the same exact thing (except no speedo shake) when my TCU is plugged in so I just shift it manually. But my 89 is so clean with only 78,xxx miles and I really want it right. Plus it's killing gas mileage.

I've posted this on so many forums. First with the 94 and now my 89. Have never gotten the answer or many answers. Since it happened on both my jeeps I thought it would be kind of common. Maybe I'm doomed to have this problem.

From reading about this issue, I find that your Transmission Valve Body Solenoid may be stuck open or closed or be bad. Sticking open or closed can cause all kinds of weird unwanted shifting, sticking in gear etc. Maybe unplugging the TCU is bypassing the TVBS? Man you ask tough questions.

Either of your driveshafts? maybe they need to be rebuilt? Not sure, I had a bad vibration around 55mph and I took the front driveshaft out and it went away. I rarely wheel so I just put it back in before it snows

Good suggestion my friend but my 94 is 2wd and it does the same thing haha. There has to be an answer to this. It just seems like it would be something fairly simple since it runs fine as soon as I unplug the TCU. So I know it has to be somehow tied to that. I'll check back in tomorrow and see if any suggestions came in.

One area to research is TCU function of torque converter lock up. No expert here on that but I would be inclined to check those converter bolts at a minimum.
This article on shift mods give a small insight on the TCU relationship with the torque converter.

Hey all. Can't sleep so I started researching (learning) and I started reading up on TV cable adjusting. I found a few people that sort of (not exactly) had my problem and adjusting the TV cable fixed it. I need to do it anyway. I know it hasn't been done since 89.
As bad as I want to go out at 3:15 AM I'm going to wait until tomorrow.

Of my Tips, which ones have you completed?
Here's an excerpt from the first one.
The components grounding at the dipstick tube stud are:
Distributor Sync Sensor, TCU main ground, TCU “Shift Point Logic”, Ignition Control Module, Fuel Injectors, ECU main ground (which other engine sensors ground through, including the Oxygen sensor, Knock Sensor, Cruise Control), and Transmission Sync signal. All extremely important stuff.

I'm going to adjust TV cable today. Hopefully clean throttle body (screws are stripped) today. And start cleaning grounds up today (start with dipstick haha)

Look what I found when I went to clean the grounds at dipstick tubing. Whether this is causing my problem is yet to be determined but it most certainly needed fixing. Also what the best way to clean the wires themselves: baking soda, cola?

It didn't solve the problem, I was doubtful it would. I cleaned grounds and wrapped exposed wires in electric tape good and it made no difference.
I don't understand this problem.
Maybe it's because my speedometer wobbles until I hit 45mph. I'm going to start working on that.

If both years are doing same thing I check for codes on the 94. Might shed some light on issue. Adjusting detent didnt help either.

Okay still no solve and I've been some of Cruisers tips as I can.
I've thought of a part of description of issue I left out. So in numbered points here it is again to hopefully simplify.
1. Jeep runs smooth until 43-45 mph then it shakes/vibrates. If I get up over 50mph it seems to stop.
2. If I let off gas it stops. If I press gas back while at 45mph it shakes.
3. If I unplug TCU it runs fine at all speeds.
4. Speedometer wobbles until 45mph then stops. It does this whether TCU is in or not.
This is as simple as I can describe it without having one of you guys drive it. Hope the new part about gas helps.
