Default Crunk it up....massive oil leak.

89 XJ 4.0 auto 4x4 102,000 miles.

Well I got everything put back together and gave it crank. It started up but oil was just pouring from around the oil filter area so I'm assuming when I had to loosen the oil filter adapter/housing 16mm bolt to get the big motor mount bolt out that I either didn't get it back tight enough.....or the O-ring got ruined. Dang this has been one set back after another.

There's only an O-rings in there correct? Is there a gasket also? I guess another day I'm stuck without my Jeep until I can go to the parts store.

By the way I am reading about torx bits T55/T60. I only loosed a 16mm bolt to turn it to the side.

EDIT: I believe I solved the oil leak. I have done all this work myself except for tightening the oil filter. My brother in law did that. I cru k it again and checked. It appeared to be pouring oil at the filter not the adapter. Took the filter back off and gave the Ol' chick-n-picker tighten and as of now I didn't see any more oil pouring. Guess I got to go get more oil.

I am however leaking coolant at the t-stat housing pretty good. I didn't use RTV so I guess I'll go get some and another gasket. I would have been screwed in 1955 without RTV.

I didnt go crazy tight so..... maybe I should go give my thermostat housing the ol chick-n-picker tighten. But that may end in a cracked housing......

"I would have been screwed in 1955 without RTV."

Bet me. This has been around since 1909.

Heh. If you even know about Indian Head you are an old bugger. If you have used it, you are even older!

(Yeah, I know about it, but I haven't used it. )

That's a relief. My son did that to me once. It's amazing how fast you can dump oil that way.

I didn't find any need to use any sealant, but then, I used a FelPro gasket. Worked fine the first time.

Glad you figured it out. Torx head was used on later models which makes them a bit harder to remove given the limited space in front of it. There are actually 3-orings in the adapter. One against the block, one under the head of the bolt, and one inside on the bolt itself. There is a dorman kit for like $10 that has them all in the correct, slightly odd-ball sizes.

Yeah, I didn't know that stuff was still made! The only problems I had with it was getting it OFF! Acetone works good.

Being an old bugger myself, some of the old stuff still works, you young whippersnapper! 74 years young and still driving a jeep. I started working on cars at 14 with my dad and had my own car at 16. I got my license then also.

Industrial O-ring sizes, 017,212,230. about 75 cents. That big ring gets hard from engine heat after a while. You should replace it after moving it because it's gonna start pretty soon. Some of the early ones are a different size.

Hey, thank you for those parts numbers. Tomorrow I am going to refill it with oil. I lost about 3 quarts in 2 cranks at about 2 seconds a crank......haha. I will not crank it again until it's properly filled. I am going to wipe everything off and will keep a very close eye on it and as soon as I see any leak I will go buy those O-Rings. Actually I will go ahead and buy them put them in my Jeep with my fuel injector O-Ring then I can change them no matter when or where they start leaking.......

I'm 25 by the way.

Ha! I don't get called that very often these days! You've got a dozen years on me, so you really are an old bugger!
