cutting out the muffler and putting in a straight pipe

you really shouldnt dump the exhaust under the body it will cause heat damage and it is possible flumes will enter the cab plus it looks garbbage running a strait through from cat to bumper wont do any real harm it will be louder and you might lose some low end power but not a noticable amount as far as cat removal it is not legal in and state to remove one the 4l preferes to run one

I drove around for a month or 2 with it dumping out after the muffler and after a while it sucked. The drown was loud and the exhaust gases came into the jeep thru the rust holes i had. I got sick of it and put the stock tailpipe back on. I'm running a dynomax turbo muffler thats like $45 at autozone/advance and i love the sound, nice calm throaty sound inside and much meaner sound out back.
If you go out to ORV trails alot, do everyone a favor and put a muffler on it. Only D-bags like to be the loudest around

Still running a straight-thru Magnaflow but replaced the under cab turndown with a side exit turnout. The small amount of interior cab drone we had is now completely gone....zero, zip, nada drone. Inside, it's just quieter when the sound waves don't bounce up off the pavement and back toward the floorboard.......outside, it's the same.

But he had to go under the frame rail which means its lower than the stock exhaust and it looks like its under the leave spring too which means it will get caught on stuff. Mine's stock height and i wheel the crap out of it

Not loud to you may be extremely loud to others. For example, I have a cat delete on my Focus right now. Some people said it sounds really nice and isn't loud at all. After installed with my catback, I hate it. It's loud, droning and raspy. Comparing apples to cheesecake here I know but the point, loud is a relative term.

Just in my preference... I would leave a catalytic converter on a motor. It seems to tame the raspy sound without restricting as much as a off set resonator. Plus it is required to make the vehicle street legal.

If I'm not mistaken, most of the exhaust is below the frame rail. Since ours is a 4X2 DD XJ, off road is a non-issue but still fun to mod. Now it has great sounding, free flowing exhaust that's not irritating in the cab or sound like a teenie bopper rice mobile. Our leaf spring is staying put, not leaving anywhere. LOL

his Cherokee is also a 1998. The difference in the years may be why his hangs lower then yours. I don't remember if mine hangs lower then the frame rails or not.

Thats also a bad picture because he took it from the ground to show the exhaust and not level with the bottom of the frame rail to really show how low it hangs.

Bad picture! Geez, I delete them if they're bad. LOL Maybe you can tell from this pic that the muff is below the frame rail but up very close to the heat shield........just like stock.
