Thanks for that - I somehow thought that the presence of EGR would be a bigger headache than the flange lining up.

I am replacing the head and head gasket on my son's 98 Cherokee. The parts house is asking if the 0630 head has a temperature port. If they are referring to the coolant temp, isn't that in the thermostat housing or is there another port? Reason for the replacement is that he was getting a constant over heat. No coolant in the oil, new water pump, new thermostat, new lower hose. Upper hose gets hot and so does the lower hose. Had a local shop look at it as well and they said that the blue liquid was turning green due to exhaust gases in the coolant. They said that the head gasket was most likely gone. The head once removed did not appear to have any cracks, the valves were all white. Can send a pic if needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it were me, I wouldn't replace the head. Have it checked for flatness on the bottom and go with it.

Will a 96 head fit on my 90(renix) with no problems?

Will I have to use a 96 intake manifold and exhaust?

I would just hate to get it all ready and find out its gonna need to have some modifying. She's my daily so I need to have it done in a weekend. Thanks

Yes it will fit, but you might not have a hole tapped in the driver side rear for the temp gauge sender. No big deal.

Just sure you use an intake/exhaust gasket for the Renix and you're good to go.

cruiser54,

Speaking of thanks...I have been active here for about 2 years. You have probably noticed that I try to read and respond to questions every day. I crossed 1,000 posts today, and thought that was pretty cool.

Then I realized that even at my fairly active rate of reading and responding to posts, it would take me about 70 years to catch up with your post count...and that's if you stopped posting.

I can't even imagine how many people you have helped. With that much interaction, I bet you've helped fix the same XJs over multiple owners before and not even known it!

Thanks.

So I think after reading thru this whole thread I've found the answers I'm looking for but I would just like to clarify what I have and what I'm hopefully going to accomplish. I have a 99 XJ that I'm fairly sure has a cracked head. This particular 99 does NOT have the coil rail. It still has the same distributor configuration as my 94 XJ that is my daily driver so I shouldnt have to build any adaptor plates or brackets to compensate for the coil rail. I also have several other donor jeeps but the one I'm hoping to use is the head off a 93 XJ. I have not had a chance to check for the previously mentioned temp sensor hole/port on the rear drivers side. From what I've read in this thread it would seem that everything should match up short of building an adaptor plate for the exhaust manifold. Just wondering if all this sounds correct or if I have grossly misread or misunderstood something. Please correct me if any of this sounds wrong

Default What to do???

I have a 96 jeep cherokee 4.0 and i read that year had the 0630 cylinder head but the one I bought had the 0331. It's cracked and i want to put the original 0630 in it. Will it just go right back on or do I have to make adjustments because it had the 0331 on it?

Good little read if it's accurate.

I am using an 0630 head that has the rear coolant temp sensor.
Everywhere I read says that they do not have it.

I think 5-90 covered it best of all. I was going to mention the smaller exhaust ports on some, but he beat me to it. I see no mention of the head locator dowels on the later blocks that the older heads may not have holes for. Just pull the dowels!

BTW, I had an auto shop machinist tell me something that stands to reason and I never thought about. He says a lot of the problems with warped heads is do to removing them unevenly with an impact wrench. I can see this happening with a long head like the 4.0 or a flathead engine. I've done this myself, but only after loosening all the bolts with a breaker bar first. You gotta love those rear 2 on the 4.0!

Cruiser's the man! If he hasn't got the answer you're SOL! My main thing is the WJ, but engines in general.
