If the 2000 engine is fine and the 1997 engine is shot, you can easily put the '00 engine into the '97. Use the '97 intake and exhaust manifolds and install install the distributor where the sensor is. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

I don't think so, at least the exhaust manifold from 00 and 01 doesn't fit right on the earlier heads.

That is true, the 00-01 exhaust manifold will not fit properly on the earlier heads without modification, but the earlier exhaust manifolds WILL fit on the 00-01 head. The exhaust ports are larger on the earlier heads, the 00-01 exhaust manifold will not cover the ports completely. The earlier exhaust manifold with the larger openings will fit the smaller ports on the 00-01 head. Just use the earlier gasket.
