I've gotta pick some parts up from the Jeep shop in town on Monday so I'll ask them too.

I appreciate the help and I'll post some pictures when I do it so hopefully it helps someone else.
Yes you are correct.

OK, I see now, did some homework. The carriage definitely needs to come out to get at the left hand seal as you said. Installing the new [U]might[U] be easier with the right inner axle removed if you had a suitable tool to feed clear through to drive it in. (myself, I'd just tap it in).

The right on the other hand, goes in the disco housing. That, I assume Cruiser (Jeep dealer teck) is saying you can fashion a sort of slide hammer with all-thread, to pull it in?

Makes me grateful I'm just doing U-joints and my seal's don't leak. (yet).

The hell they don't!!!

Selec-Trac used one piece axles with no vac disconnect throughout all years and Command-Trac used two piece vacuum activated axles on the right side from 1984 through 1990. In 1991 or 1992, Command-Trac went with one piece axles just like Selec-Trac.

If you have the disco axle, the passenger side seal can be replaced without pulling the carrier as the seal is outboard of the axle disconnect mechanism. It is put into place through the opening after the disco motor is removed. It is pulled into place with either the special tool (good luck finding one of those) or a threaded rod with nuts and washers.

It's actually the left side that leaks so the diff has to come out. Regardless I would do both sides at the same time anyway. I'm even gonna do ball joints and u joints just so hopefully I don't have to pull the hub/knukle for another 23 years.

Just be sure to mark the bearing caps to be sure you get them back on in the correct position and you'll be fine.
