I've gotta pick some parts up from the Jeep shop in town on Monday so I'll ask them too.
I appreciate the help and I'll post some pictures when I do it so hopefully it helps someone else.

OK, I see now, did some homework. The carriage definitely needs to come out to get at the left hand seal as you said. Installing the new [U]might[U] be easier with the right inner axle removed if you had a suitable tool to feed clear through to drive it in. (myself, I'd just tap it in).
The right on the other hand, goes in the disco housing. That, I assume Cruiser (Jeep dealer teck) is saying you can fashion a sort of slide hammer with all-thread, to pull it in?
Makes me grateful I'm just doing U-joints and my seal's don't leak. (yet).

Selec-Trac used one piece axles with no vac disconnect throughout all years and Command-Trac used two piece vacuum activated axles on the right side from 1984 through 1990. In 1991 or 1992, Command-Trac went with one piece axles just like Selec-Trac.

It is pulled into place with either the special tool (good luck finding one of those) or a threaded rod with nuts and washers.

Just be sure to mark the bearing caps to be sure you get them back on in the correct position and you'll be fine.
