Dana 30 axle Disconnect
Got a question for you guys.
I'm planning on upgrading the axles in both my front and rear diffs. Right now I'm in the process of getting a Chrysler 8.25 (29 spline too, under 100k miles for $125), cleaning it up (internally and externally), new fluid, paint, rear disc brakes conversion, and finally, new Alloy axles.
The reason for the axles? Not only peace of mind, but since soon they will be putting down the power of a Chevy LT1, I figure they need the extra beef.
Anyways, I will also be doing the same for my front Dana 30. However, I will be ordering this kit from FrankZ: http://www.seriousoffroadproducts.co...ducts_id=75692
Clearly, this is a disco eliminator. And yes, my '91 has that lovely little box on the axle that takes merely the ***** of a hose and no 4x4. Here's my question:
Is there any benefit WHATSOEVER using a disco front axle? (less t-case wear, better mileage, etc..)
Would it be worth while to simply seek out stronger two piece shafts and just do the posi-lock vacuum eliminate upgrade?
I wouldn't think this swap would have any ill effect on my NP231. Any input is appreciated. Thanks for the help!

That's what I figured, however I just read on another forum that unless the Dana 30 has spider gears, a solid locked axle can cause problems anywhere from premature u-joint failure to t-case problems. Is this true?
Does anyone even make 2 piece alloy shafts for the D30? If they did, I might just go ahead and do the Posi-lock upgrade. Idk... axles are FAR from my expertise when it comes to general knowledge. All I know is how to swap them and that appariently alloy is the bully of the axle playground.

You could get a non disconnect front axle with the 297 u-joints, I'm thinking 95-99, that would net you better u-joints and no more disconnect or housing for it. I think you should be able to pick one up alot cheaper than the cost of the axle kit, but no alloy shafts.

So after some more research, I found two things:
According to one website, appariently I can use a solid shaft in place of the CAD, with the only alterations being the axle seal and block plate for the vacuum disco housing.
But then, according to another source, I CANNOT do a simple swap, need a kit, however the coupler in the Disco is strong with thick splines.
So which way do I go? The kit in the OP, or try and find disco alloy shafts and install posi-lock?

I looked for other axles in my area for the front end, and lets just say I was super mega holy crap lucky finding the C8.25 for such a low price. Plus, according to a couple of cources (both people who have done the swap as well as adapter sites) saying that stock axles can handle, plus considering this would still be like 85% DD, 15% wheeler, but not a mount everest warrior. So, to be on the safe side, I'm upgrading the axles.

This post was deleted/edited because it was a totally uncalled for outburst on my end.

Then I can only hope you will accept my sincere apology. Pirate4x4 was getting to me there. It's my fault; I have a hard time reading sarcasm through the web. Again, I am sorry for what was probably one of the biggest "I'm an ***hole" moments of the entire forum.

Yeah, but irregardless of what others may have done/said worse than my little brain fart doesn't mean I should excuse it. But my Lord, I swear Pirate has this effect. I think I've posted 2 topics over there, and I was afraid fire and death were going to explode through my monitor. I think the word "nice" is banned on that forum.

No worries man. On another note, I blew the motor in mt trans about 5yrs ago, a friend knew a repo guy that had a wrecked 93 with an lt1 so I bought it for $350. This car was trashed, rolled and bent around a pole...but it still ran great! I get the car home and start cuttin it open w the chop saw.....it wasnt a lt1....it was a 98 w an ls1...i bought a perfectly good ls1 (w a bbk tb) for $350. Score of a lifetime
