Default Dana 30 front axle identification

Looks like I might have myself a busted front axle. I was online trying to price some chrome alloy ones out and it looks like there are two types that I see advertised.
1. Dana 30 crush sleeve design
2. Dana 30 front reverse rotation

Is there any easy way to identify which axles I need without taking everything apart?

The Jeep is a 99 XJ, with a D30 front and a 8.25, 29 spline rear.

Thanks for the help.

TJ's came equipped with the short pinion, low pinion D30.

The 8.25", 29 spline axle is typically found in 97+ XJ's and Liberties. So obviously someone has swapped out the OEM rear axle for your current axle.

In that case you have a high pinion Dana 30.

So let me ask you a question if you dont mind. I see that you can just replace one axle at a time. In my TJ rockcrawler I never once broke a front axle. I dont know if these high pinion Dana 30's are weak, or maybe I was semi cracked or something when I bought the Jeep and when I wheeled it, it just broke, but im trying to save up for a Spartan Locker for the rear. Funds are beyond limited (my kid needs braces really soon), but my Jeep is undriveable right now. Would you just replace the broken front axle with a stock replacement unit and concentrate on the rear locker, or wait until I get the money and upgrade both fronts to chrome alloy, and forget about the locker until late in the year when I might be able to afford it?

Thanks for your input?

I'd grab some shafts from the KY and replace the broken one.

I don'believe that there is a Spartan out for the 8.25 though....I may be wrong though.

They didn't have them until recently, check out ebay for spartan 27 and 29-spline 8.25 lockers

I have a feeling that the axle might have broken off inside the diff itself. Of course I wont know until I get it all apart. Is there a difference in axle parts between a high pinion or low pinion dana 30?

Sweet thanks. Thats kind of a load off my mind. I thought there might be little hardly noticeable parts that I would totally miss.
