what size is the nut on the pinion?

It's a 27 or 30 mm.

Somebody told me it might be 36mm or 1 1/8

I use a 1 1/8 and works fine, works on a D44 too.

If I remember correctly I used a 29mm socket, just start trying different sizes until you find it.
