Default Dana 30 yoke

Good morning CF.

I've been fighting a good battle with a front driveshaft vibration and I finally think I found the culprit, the ears on the dana 30 yoke have worn down allowing my u joint to move side to side, obviously this is no bueno especially at highway speeds..

So, for the questions.. I have a HP30 so there's no crush sleeve, I am good to just unbolt the pinion nut and replace the yoke without destroying my gears right? I've read many different answers to that question so I'm just looking for a definite answer.

Also, anybody else that has done this, what brand yoke did you go with? I see rusty's has a u bolt style yoke but it doesn't say what years it is compatible with. Anybody use this? http://www.rustysoffroad.com/rustys-...tyle-yoke.html

Other than that I don't really so many other options.

Thank youu all

As long as you do not have a crush caller you'll be fine. The only way to know for certain is to pull the yolk the Steel and the rear bearing and take a look.

I installed the Rustys D30 kit when I lifted mine to 4 1/2" and installed 4.56 gears and lockers. Good quality and have had no issues in the last 1 1/2 yrs.

That's what I thought, but i've triple checked and that is not the case.

I can visually see that one of the ears on the yoke is much smaller than the other, so it lets move side to side.

Get another yoke, wipe the sealing surface with gear oil or vaseline and re-install. Torque spec is 160-180 ft-lb IIRC. The nut is considered one use, and red loc-tite is applied to the threads. Factory 1999 axles came with HP axles which do not have crush sleeves.
Since its a Dana 30, you should be able to go to your local Spicer dealer for a genuine Spicer yoke, pinion seal, etc. Call and get a price. Where I live the Spicer dealer is also the driveline service shop. Good luck.

Update: The yoke WAS the problem causing my vibration. So, so glad i got this figured out. That was a long battle diagnosing that so it feels good to have it drive smoothly again.

Tip: Use some type of impact lol, I spent a good 30 minutes wailing on my pinion nut with a breaker bar before I caved and went over to a buddies house with an air compressor. Other than that the install was easy; take off nut/washer and literally swap out yoke and retighten pinion nut. Took about 30 minutes.

Thanks for the help CF

At least you found the problem and the fix was cheap.
