just for a clearance comparison my buddy has a xj with 44 f/60 r and 35" tires and he has 9 5/8" from the ground to the bottom of his rear diff im runnin a xj d44 rear on 33's and i have 10 1/8" from the ground so i have a 1/2" more clearance with 2" smaller tires so i would say 37's would be the smallest you wanna go with those big ole honkin axles hope that helps some

In all seriousness, i beat on my old XJ with 35's on stock axles. I blew the front axle from the gears commoning unmeshed. bought a JY one, added a truss and kept on going. Unless your doing rock crawling with 38+ tires, whats the point of anything bigger than an 8.8?
we's on the same boat!

PS $500 is way to much for any of those rear axles.... you can get any of them off craigslist for $150 or less...
