I've been searching the threads, but didn't see how some of you who had this problem ended up resolving it.
I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport. Two days ago, I got in the car at night, flipped on the lights, and my dash lights were out (lights for the instrument cluster, a/c controls, gear selector). Everything else works (headlights, taillights, interior dome light, turns signals, etc.). I replaced the fuse (#6 - 5 amp), but it keeps popping when I pull the switch.
My next move was to replace the switch, but I've been reading on other threads that it didn't resolve the issue. Before I break down and inspect every wire behind the dash, or worse, take it to the shop, I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and found the solution.
I appreciate your help in advance.
On a side note, this is my third XJ, and having owned a dozen or so cars, I can say that this is by far the overall favorite that I keep coming back to it for its combination of simplicity, utility, classic looks, and do-it-all-well performance.

If you have a short, you will have to chase it down. Do you know how to use an ohm meter? That is the preferred tool to do this. You unplug everything and then start checking resistance to ground. When you find no resistance, that is the culprit.
