Dashboard and tail lights out
#2
so when you turn on your accessory lights, the dashboard and tail lights do not illuminate?
if so, i would double check the fuses, i dont know if the wiring is different in an xj 98 .. but for my xj 91, if my interior (dashlight) goes out, that also means my tail lights do not illuminate either .. jeep has some funky wiring.
in my jeep xj, the fuse you should be looking for is PRK LMPS (15 AMP FUSE)
if thats not the case it could possibly be a bad ground (which i hope it isn't) and that is a pain to find!

sounds like a common ground or short problem to me. my dads 98 the dash goes out and the gauges quit working and the airbag light comes out and if u tap the cluster it comes back on and the light goes out. i gotta troubleshoot it soon.
edit: kurvy may be right. did you visually check the fuses or use a DMM? sometimes they can still be bad but look fine. check with a DMM and make sure they are close to 0ohm across em

20 Amp fuse in Engine compartment for Dash and Tails
While some have mentioned the 15 amp fuse in the passenger compartment for the tail lights and dash lights, it turns out that a 20 amp (yellow) fuse in my engine compartment was blown. When I replaced it all lights went back to normal functionality.
Weird though when I used a test light on all the fuses in the passenger compartment half of them didn't have any reading even with the ignition switch turned on. Maybe this cheapo test light I just bought sucks. dunno. Just wanted to mention the 20 amp fuse.
mine: 2001 XJ
