The steering stabilizer has nothing to do with death wobble. It just reduces the shimmies from road inperfections. To properly diagnose your death wobble, the steering stabilizer should come off so it's not masking the issue. Once the cause of the wobble is found, stabilizer can go back on. This is how I've figured out three death wobble jeeps that friends brought to me. It's never the steering stabilizer.

You are right about tires though. If you rotate them front to back and back to front, and the wobble goes away then you have found part of, or the whole issue for your wobble. Usually out of balanced or bad tires can start a wobble and a loose steering component can enhance it. The one jeep that my buddy sent my way had really bad out of balanced front tires. We thought that was the problem until we saw the loose trackbar joint. The tires would start wobbling and the trackbar had enough play to start the big side to side wobble.

I have a 99 jeep cherokee. My boyfriend who is a full time mechanic has an 87 dodge dakota with a 6 1/2 inch rough country lift in it and also a solid axle swap from a jeep cherokee. Obviously he is heavy into off-road. He reads jeep magazines all the time and he has seen this at his job pritty much every day. He knows cherokees very well. He says if all the front suspension is tight and the tires are balanced and you still have a death wobble the steering stablizer is most likely the problem. Its either that it is weak or it has play in it. On my 99 jeep cherokee it was the problem as soon as I changed my stablizer I had no more wabble. My boyfriend has reviewed alot of articles about death wobble and I have reviewed them too and they list off the posibilities and most of the time they point out the steering stablizer as a key factor!

You can go ahead and believe whatever you wish.

But please let those who understand the concept post up the right information.

Thanks !

Take that stabilizer off your 99 and the death wobble will show it's ugly head again. It's still there, you just masked it with a new stabilizer.

Seriously, a stabilizer will not cause death wobble. It's a 50/50 valved shock that has nothing to do with a wobble. It can only reduce it, not eliminate it.

Maybe I missed it, but have you found the cause of your DW issue?
