1. Drove to Ace and rented a 2700psi pressure washer.
2. Drove home, parked in driveway with engine running.
3. Used one can of engine degreaser on oil buildup.
4. Set up pressure washer and have some fun spraying.
5. Repeat steps 3&4 as necessary.
I didn't cover any parts. Did this to my 1990 XJ, 1997 XJ, and 1985 Toyota Tercel. Again not saying this is the right way but its how I did it.

I've only had one vehicle not want to start after an engine wash and it was a ford....... My suggestion is to be liberal with 409 or whatever degreaser you prefer and strategic with the water placement and you should be ok. I use the carwash pressure washer and have yet to have any problems, just leave it running while you wash it.

I detailed for 6+ years. When we washed the engine bays we would do the following:
-Turn on the vehicle
-Spray degreaser throughout the engine bay
-Allow to soak for a few
-Pressure wash the engine bay
-While vehicle is still running, shut the hood and allow the vehicle to evap the lingering water
-Wash exterior of vehicle (degreaser on paint is not nice)
Most vehicles never had an issue. One or two vehicles had minor issues such as a temp. CEL, etc.

Can't remember how many I've done over the years. Just a few days ago, did my WJ.
Pump chemical sprayer full of purple power. Hose the block (and all the greasy stuff underneath) down really good with the PP. while engine is still warm. Let it soak while you have a smoke or beer or a soda if you're under 21. Using a spray nozzle on the hose, spray off everything that got the PP on it. Start up the engine and let it run while you put everything away. Turn off engine, enjoy another beer. Just don't spray down all the things with wires coming out of it.
