Default Diagnose a no power issue

Ok, I know very little about Jeeps... and not that much about gas burner engines. I drive a diesel and what mechanical work I've done has been on diesels.

My buddy's got a mid-90s Jeep Cherokee... he was driving home night before last and noticed that his head lights were beginning to get dim. Pretty soon cars started to flash him, indicating that he had no lights at all. Then interior dash lights started to fade. Finally the Jeep itself died (ABS and CE lights came on first) and he was able to coast into a side road. I loaded him up on my trailer and hauled him home.

My thought is alternator... BUT, I don't know enough about gas burners and these Jeeps to be certain enough to feel right about telling him to spring for an alternator with no other testing.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Oh, it's probably the alternator. Most parts places will test them for you at no cost.

XX2 what Radi said.. test alt. AND put the battery on overnite charge before you even try to start it.. His new alt. won't charge up a dead battery. If it won't hold 12+ volts, replace it too.. especially if it's +4 or 5 years old. Clean up all the connections to the alt. and especially the battery terminals. I think you nailed it!
