Did I Kill It
Got my 88 xj all set up to tow behind my motorhome. Friday hooked it all up and headed out hunting. Put the tranfer case in n and ran the motor put the trans in drive and reverse to make sure it was out of gear. put the trans in N and away we go. 100 miles later pulling a pass I smell something hot and find a pull out. Smoke come from the hood and gearoil driping from under at the bellhousing. havn't put it on ramps or anything to get under to look yet. Did I kill my $500 Jeep?

Did you put the transmission in park like you are suppose to? Not sure how, but if you don't put the transmission in park it will turn and build up heat and without the radiator cooling the transmission oil it over heats.

is it auto or stick?
to tow behind your motorhome, you want the jeeps transfer case to be in neutral and the auto in park or stick in 1st, not neutral.
if it's auto and left in neutral, the moving parts inside won't get lubricated unless the engine is on, so you most likely burnt out your torque converter seal.
it will still work properly, just will leak out tranny fluid from the bellhousing.

If needed, pick up an entire trans. Depending on your area you can get them for less than $300. Someone around here was selling his auto out of a totalled truck for $225 asking if I remember correctly.
