Did not install distributer gasket

I have a 1992 cherokee laredo. I just installed a new distributer. No gasket came with the distributer. Is there supposed to be a gasket?

Distributer gasket surface problems

I tried removing the gasket from my distributer surface, that thing was not coming off so I had no choice but to use a razor blade. I left some scratches on the surface and part of the old gasket still wasn't coming off. After a few hours and not gaining any progress I decided to call it and I just put a new gasket on. Anyone know if this is gonna be a problem or had a similar experience?
