Default Dies When Driving.

I have a 2000 jeep cherokee classic 4.0 with 137k miles on it. I was driving home from work one day when I felt a jolt, but when I looked down all my gauges looked fine. Then the next day I was driving to work and I was pulling into the parking lot and it completely died. I went to try to start it and it would just crank. So I unhooked the battery real quick to see if that would fix it but still nothing. When I went to try to start it at the end of the work day it started then stalled. I looked at my tps sensor and the connector had fraud wires so I wondered if they were touching and causing it to not turn over. I messed with the wires and tried to push them back in and it started. I was going home and it died when I was driving, then it started on it’s own, then died again, then started, so I put it in neutral and turned the key off and pulled into a gas station. So I took it to Firestone and they said it was either a bad computer or a wiring harness. They didn’t fix anything because they couldn’t diagnose anything. So I changed the tps and the connector. So then I start it and it was fine, I let it get up to operating temp and went for a drive. I was driving and it was fine till I floored it and it downshifted then when it got into high rpms it completely died again.
Anything to check or change?
Please help.

Random stalling out that occurs when the engine is hot and starts fine when cold, particularly for automatics, can indicate a failing CPS. I have never experienced an issue with a CPS, but I also never have owned an automatic tranny Jeep.

In your case, I'd consider the "fraud wires" on the TPS to be a big ol' red flag. Double checking the repair and then taking a very, very thorough look through all the wiring in the engine compartment would be MY first step. If you do want to replace the CPS, make sure you use a Mopar part - these Jeeps are awful picky about that part in particular from what folks on this forum have reported.

The CPS is not cheap. Good to test before replacement. But I agree with Sir Patrick - that does sound like classic CPS.

Mopar only. Yes, it really does matter. People have gotten everything from bad out of the box, to lasting a few minutes, to lasting a few weeks or months out of aftermarket products, even those that have a good name. Jeeps are just very picky about sensors, especially that one, as Pat said.

The CPS and computer are both awful pricey parts to blindly fire the parts cannon on.
Also they "can't" diagnose? More like they "won't".. I'd think twice about anyone calling themselves a mechanic that can't do a routine electrical diagnostic.

Seriously, it's worth the time and effort to inspect the wiring yourself and correct any suspicious ones. Pull connectors and clean them up. Even the Jeep gods like cruiser and Blueridgemark will tell you to do this first... it's cheap, easy enough and at worst you at least eliminate that as a problem so if you do sink the money into expensive parts, you're confident it's not a waste.

Well.... Firestone. Yeah.

Might be fine for tires, but I would not trust them to change oil, let alone diagnose an engine problem. Same for Pep Boys and similar places.

It's hard to find a good mechanic, but it's worth the hunt. One way to find the good ones is to ask at your local NAPA or CarQuest (if there are any still around). Since they cater to the professionals, they often know who is good and who is not. I've been told they aren't supposed to do that, so they might not if you just walk in off the street, but if you are a regular customer, it's a different story.
